As a performer, Gavin specializes in tenor and alto trombones in both classical and commercial music.
Since moving to the Twin Cities, he has performed with many of the local brass bands, orchestras, jazz bands, and rock groups. He is also a member of the Chimera Consort brass quartet, has been a featured soloist with the Twin Cities Brass Band, and performed the world premiere of Samantha Hogan’s “Trombone Concerto” with the Golden Valley Symphony Orchestra.
Before moving to the Twin Cities area, Gavin Carney had performance experience with the Northland Symphony Orchestra, the NewEar new music ensemble, the Ångström Brass quintet, and was a tenured member of the Washington Idaho Symphony. He also toured with Joe Mattingly and the Newman Singers in their horn line for six years. Prior to studying at UMKC, Gavin acquired music degrees from the University of Iowa and Washington State University.
